How to use it

Use the header and avatar as separate assets
X recommends a 1500 × 500 header and a 400 × 400 profile image. The header gives you a wide space for a background or brief message; the avatar needs a recognizable face or mark at a small size. They can share a palette without repeating the same entire design. Select the intended slot before adjusting the crop.
Leave room for changing display sizes
X’s help notes that roughly 60 pixels at the top and bottom of a header can be cropped depending on the browser and monitor. The guide marks the remaining center band as a planning aid. It does not reproduce every interface overlap. Keep essential words comfortably inside it and review the actual profile on a phone after uploading.
Make a wide composition from an ordinary photo
A 3:1 header is much wider than a typical camera photograph. Fill mode crops away vertical space, so move the subject into the visible band before zooming. A horizon, workspace or group arranged horizontally often adapts better than a tight headshot. If you need the complete original, Fit mode adds padding without stretching the people or objects in it.
Use the avatar preview for small details
Switching to the profile picture preset shows a circular preview. Keep eyes, facial features or a logo’s main shape inside that circle, and leave a small margin. Fine taglines are difficult to read at avatar size even when the upload is sharp. A simple symbol version of a logo can be more useful here than a complete horizontal wordmark.
Export a clean image
These presets save JPEG files. The profile-picture option checks the 2 MB maximum documented by X. This page does not apply that profile limit to the header as though both slots shared one rule. Inspect the saved image if your source has very fine lines, and use the original artwork again for revisions rather than recompressing the last exported JPEG.
Apply the image in the profile editor
Choose the exported file through X’s profile editing controls and confirm the crop offered there. Check the profile with the avatar, name and controls visible together. If the design relies on a word hidden behind the avatar or near a clipped edge, adjust the source layout and make a fresh export. Keep an unchanged original for future profile updates.
