How do you change your font on Discord?

Messages have no font setting — only the app’s theme and text size. Nitro members can give their display name one of Discord’s Display Name Styles; for everything else, and without Nitro, copy styled Unicode text like the ones on this page and paste it into a message, your display name, a server nickname or your About Me.

Is this the same as Discord’s Display Name Styles?

No. Display Name Styles are a Nitro feature that Discord draws itself, and they change your name only. These are Unicode characters: they need no Nitro and work in any text field — messages, About Me, status and server nicknames included.

Can I use a fancy font in my Discord username?

Your username is limited to lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so no. Your display name and server nicknames do accept styled text.

Why do my fonts show up as boxes for some people?

A few styles use characters that older systems lack. Current Windows, macOS, iOS and Android show all of them, but if a friend sees empty boxes, switch to a common style such as bold or bold script.

Why can’t people @mention my fancy name?

Mentions match the characters of a name, and 𝕾𝖙𝖎𝖈𝖐 is not the same text as Stick. People can still find you by your plain username, which does not change with your display name.

Can I use colored text in Discord?

Not with Unicode styles. Colored text in Discord comes from ANSI code blocks, which is a separate formatting trick.

Where fonts show up on Discord

Styled text works in your display name, server nicknames, your About Me, a custom status and messages, and in server and channel names you can edit. Your username is the exception: it only takes lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores.

Discord’s own formatting

In messages, Discord’s markdown covers a lot: **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~, ||spoilers||, `inline code`, > quotes, # headings at the start of a line (#, ## or ###) and -# for small subtext. What markdown cannot do is change the letters themselves, or style a name, a status or an About Me — that is where Unicode fonts come in.

Colored text

Discord has no color picker for text. Colors come from an ANSI code block — a message that starts with ```ansi — and escape codes inside it. That works in messages only; the fonts on this page work everywhere text does.

Nicknames and server rules

Many servers ask members to keep nicknames readable and mentionable, and some bots rename anyone whose name starts with special characters to jump the member list. If a moderator asks, keep a plain version of your name.

Keep it readable

Screen readers read styled characters out as symbols, and they do not match a search or an @mention typed in plain letters. Style a word, not the whole message.
