Use the right thumbnail specification
YouTube’s current help recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for video thumbnails and a minimum width of 640 pixels. The regular video shape is 16:9. Its file-size rules distinguish mobile uploads, with a 2 MB video-thumbnail limit, from desktop uploads, which allow 50 MB. The presets here reflect that distinction rather than applying one limit to every upload path.
Start with a readable composition
A thumbnail is frequently shown much smaller than the image you upload. Put the main subject where it is recognizable at a glance, and leave breathing room around it. If your design includes words, prepare a short headline in the original artwork. Resizing a dense slide deck page rarely creates a readable thumbnail because all the small words shrink together.
Choose a crop before adding more detail
Fill mode uses the whole thumbnail rectangle and lets you drag the picture to position the subject. Fit with padding preserves the original edges when a diagram or screenshot must remain complete. Review both approaches before committing to one. A clean crop often explains the video more clearly than a background full of competing visual details.
Balance dimensions and file weight
A noisy photograph can produce a larger JPEG than a simple illustration at the same dimensions. When a preset has a byte limit, the resizer tries lower JPEG quality and reports whether the output fits. Inspect the saved image around text and faces after compression. If quality suffers, simplify the source artwork or use the smaller output instead of repeatedly recompressing an already compressed file.
Check the upload in Studio
Custom thumbnails require an eligible, verified YouTube account. Choose the video in Studio and select the image you saved. Review the result where it will appear, including small previews. Leave the lower-right corner visually quiet when possible so a duration label does not obscure an important number or word. The exact overlay size depends on where YouTube displays the thumbnail.
Keep video, Shorts and podcast artwork separate
This page’s presets are for landscape video thumbnails. A Short or a podcast playlist can need a different composition and shape. Changing a landscape image into a vertical or square asset may remove a large portion of it. Build those layouts separately rather than assuming the same cover will communicate equally well in every placement.
