Facebook cover photo size

Prepare a Facebook cover image and compare two useful working canvases: a wide 851 × 315 layout and a taller 1640 × 924 composition. Facebook can crop covers differently across views, so keep essential details central and check the upload preview.

How to use it

  1. Load the source photograph or completed cover artwork.
  2. Compare the wide and taller workspaces, choosing the one that leaves room for the subject.
  3. Crop with Fill or keep the whole graphic with Fit and padding.
  4. Save the image and inspect its final position in Facebook on a phone and desktop.

Separate the uploaded file from the displayed cover

A cover’s file dimensions describe the artwork you save, while its displayed shape depends on the Facebook view. This tool offers working canvases so you can prepare and compare compositions. The presets are not a guarantee that every edge remains visible. Use the current profile or Page cover editor to judge the crop for the place where you will publish it.

Start with the part that must remain visible

Pick one essential element, such as a face, storefront, event title or brand mark. Place it well away from the outer edges of the original artwork. Avoid relying on small words near a corner, because both cropping and interface elements can make them difficult to see. Keep detailed information in the Page’s written fields as well as any cover graphic.

Choose between the wide and taller workspaces

The wide canvas is useful for a short horizontal design that is already arranged as a banner. The taller canvas gives you more image area above and below the central subject, which can help when repositioning the cover in the upload editor. Compare the two before deciding. A different workspace changes the crop, not the resolution or quality of the original photograph.

Keep existing logos intact

If a logo or event poster must remain fully visible, choose Fit with padding and a matching solid color. Fill mode is better for a photograph that can lose some of its edges. A blurred background can work for an informal photo, while a plain background usually gives text and line art more contrast. The saved image uses the same arrangement shown in the preview.

Review mobile and desktop separately

After selecting the file in Facebook, check the cover on a phone and a wider screen. Look for a headline hidden by the profile image, a face close to a crop edge or a key detail that becomes too small. If one view fails, revise the original composition with more central spacing and upload a fresh export instead of repeatedly dragging an unsuitable layout.

Keep the original design editable

A cover often changes with a season, launch or event. Store the original artwork with editable text somewhere you can find it. This resizer works on the finished picture and cannot update a date or remove a label from its background. For the next update, change the original, export it cleanly and use the same canvas to keep the visual style consistent.
