Three kinds of small

Superscript sits high, like ᵗʰⁱˢ; subscript sits low, like ₜₕᵢₛ; small caps are capitals at lowercase height, like ᴛʜɪꜱ. Superscript is the most complete set, which is why it is the usual choice for tiny text.

Why some letters stay full size

Unicode never got a complete small alphabet. Subscript has no b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y or z, and superscript q is borrowed from another script, so those letters come out full size or as a look-alike. Small caps cover every letter but x, with q borrowed.

Where tiny text works

Bios and names on Instagram and TikTok, Discord nicknames, X posts and most chat apps accept it, because it is ordinary text rather than formatting. Search does not match it to normal letters, so keep the words people look you up by full size.

Use it for asides

Tiny text suits a tagline, a pronoun line or a quiet footnote. It is hard to read on a phone and read letter by letter by screen readers, so nothing important should live in it.
