To add a link to an Instagram story, use the Link sticker: open the Story camera, tap the sticker icon, choose Link and paste the address. Anyone who can see the story can tap the sticker to visit the page.
Instagram opened it to all accounts in October 2021. Before that, it kept links in Stories for verified accounts and accounts above a follower threshold, which is where the advice about follower minimums comes from. There is no minimum now, with two exceptions covered below.
How to add a link sticker#
- Tap Create at the top of your feed, or swipe right anywhere in the feed, and choose Story at the bottom.
- Take a photo or video, or swipe up to pick one from your camera roll.
- Tap the Stickers icon at the top of the screen, then Link.
- Paste the URL. See Preview, under the address, shows what the page looks like when someone opens it — the quickest way to catch a typo before anyone else does.
- Confirm, then drag the sticker to where you want it.
- Tap Your Story in the bottom left to share.
These are the steps Instagram's help center gives for both the iPhone and the Android app, checked on 28 October 2026.
Give people a reason to tap#
A sticker on its own does not tell anyone why they should tap it. Say it in text above the sticker — "the full recipe", "tickets, 40 left" — and keep both clear of the top and bottom edges, where Instagram draws your name and its own controls. Once the sticker is placed, tap it to cycle through its color variations and pick the one that stands out against the photo.
If Instagram's own story fonts do not suit the line, the styled letters from our Instagram fonts tool paste into story text as well.
If you design the background yourself, leave room for all of that. Our Instagram Story size tool turns an image into a 1080 × 1920 story and marks a suggested area for the main message, so the sticker has somewhere to go.
If the Link sticker is missing#
Instagram's help center and the 2021 announcement that opened the sticker to everyone point to three reasons:
- The app is out of date. When a sticker does not appear, Instagram's first suggestion is to update the app from the App Store or Google Play. It also notes that not every sticker is available to everyone.
- The account is new, or has a record. When it opened the sticker to all accounts, Instagram left out new accounts and accounts that repeatedly share hate speech, misinformation or other content that breaks its Community Guidelines.
- It is a reel, not a story. Instagram says not every sticker is available for reels. The Link sticker is a Stories feature; a tappable link on a reel is something Meta now sells, covered below.
Keep the link up after 24 hours#
A story disappears from your profile, feed and inbox after 24 hours. To keep one around — a shop, a booking page, the newsletter — add it to a Highlight: open the story, tap More in the bottom right, then Highlight. Highlights stay on your profile until you remove them.
For a link people should always be able to find, a story is the wrong place. That is what your bio is for: up to five links that stay until you change them. Add them in the app, under Edit profile, then Links — Instagram's help center says the option isn't available on computers.
The 150 characters of bio text above those links are where you tell people why to tap them. Our character counter keeps the count, and the line break generator keeps the empty line that sets your call to action apart.
Count the taps#
Open the story, tap Activity, then Insights. Link taps are counted under Interactions, alongside sticker taps and replies. Insights need a public account, personal or professional, and stay available for up to two years after the story was posted. Instagram notes that the numbers can take a while to appear.
The count ends at the tap. What people do next happens on the page you linked to, so if it is a link in bio page, its own analytics take over from there. On Stick, which publishes this blog, a free page reports views, clicks on each link and where each visit came from.
Where else Instagram takes a link#
The sticker is one of three places, and the only one that comes and goes:
- Your bio. Up to five links, in the order you choose. If you share more than that, point one of them at a page that holds the rest. On a poster or a business card, a QR code that opens your profile gets people to those links too.
- Posts and reels, on a paid plan. Meta One, launched in September 2026, adds links to posts and reels from its Advanced plan up: 4 posts and 4 reels a month on Advanced, 8 of each on Expert, 12 of each on Max. It works on public accounts only, and not for teens. Advanced starts at $49.99 a month, and Meta says plans, prices and availability vary by region and account. A link cannot be changed after the post is shared, and unused links do not carry over. Checked against Meta's help center on 28 October 2026.
Without Meta One, a post can carry product tags from a shop's catalog, but not a link to a page of your choosing. That is the reason "link in bio" is a phrase at all. If you post something new every week, put one page behind the bio link and let the sticker point to whatever is newest.
